Elizabeth J. Manes (Bancroft)

We announce with great sadness the death of our beloved Elizabeth Joan Manes, affectionately known as Betty, on January 15, 2022. Betty passed away peacefully with her devoted husband, Tony, by her side.

Betty fought a five-year battle with an unrelenting cancer with incredible grace, courage, and determination, always thinking of others and trying to minimize the impact on those who loved her. She had tremendous strength in the face of adversity and her generous and beautiful spirit continued to shine through regardless of all the many challenges she faced.

Betty was born in Germany and raised in Bucks County where she lived all her life. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1966 and West Chester University in 1970 and received her master’s degree from Temple University. She was a dedicated math teacher in the Bristol Township school district for 35 years, finishing her career at Truman High School. Respected and recognized for her outstanding teaching skills she was honored with top level classes. Betty was known to be a patient and exceptional teacher, who was appreciated by her students for making the complicated world of math understandable for them. She really cared about her students and even inspired some of them to go on to be math teachers.

Betty was the oldest of nine children, raised with love and devotion by her parents, the late Charles and Ruth Bancroft. She was the true love and forever soulmate of Antoni Manes. Their extraordinary love story began when Betty was 15 and Tony was 16 and lasted for 58 beautiful years. They raised two loving and remarkable sons together - Matthew P Manes and the late Michael A. Manes.

Left to treasure her memory along with Tony, the love of her life, and her cherished son Matthew and his wife Naomi, are her heartbroken siblings: Gerda (Stu) Freeman, William (Annette) Bancroft, David (Ruth) Bancroft, Ursula (Carl) Rosenbaum, Barbara (Rob) Baker, Peggy (Dennis) DeFelice, Charles (Stacey) Bancroft, Ernest ( Rebecca) Bancroft, her brothers and sisters in law Paul (Andrea) Manes, Brenda Barats, Paula (Bill) Coyle, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Betty had such a loving heart. She was intelligent, thoughtful, kind and caring and was always interested in what was going on with the many people in her life, who were what mattered most to her. She had a gift for listening with genuine interest and helping people find solutions to their problems. No matter what she was going through she lovingly cared for her family and friends, who were always her highest priority.

Betty had a real appreciation for the natural world and enjoyed tending to her magnificent indoor and outdoor gardens. It brought her much happiness to watch all the animals and birds who lived on the beautiful property that she and Tony so lovingly created and cared for together.

Betty had so much gratitude for her life and for the family and friends with whom she shared it. She gave of herself so generously and appreciated every kindness she was ever shown.

The loss of Betty leaves an unimaginable void in the lives of the many who loved her. We will miss her every day and hold her in our hearts forever. She made this world a better place for all of us. Her wisdom, strength, grace, beauty, and love will be with us always.
