Stephen S. Smith

Stephen S. Smith, beloved Father, Brother, Friend, and Coach passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 17, 2023, in the arms of his two sons, doing what he loved most – spending time with his children.  He is survived by his four children, Stephanie (Jake), Stephen Jr., Zachary, and Ashley; former wife and mother of his children, Susan; three sisters, Donna (Bradley), Sandra, and Diane (Harry); eight nieces and nephews; significant other, Jackey; best four-legged friend, Bailey; and grandpuppy, Hudson.

Born on May 20, 1963, in Bristol, Pennsylvania, Stephen was the son of the late Stephen and Genevieve (Raymond) Smith.  He graduated from Neshaminy Maple Point High School, where he established himself on the football field and wrestling mat.  Later, he was inducted into both the Neshaminy Football and Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Stephen received a B.S. degree in Quantitative Business Analysis from The Pennsylvania State University, where he was part of the Division 1 Wrestling Program on Scholarship.  Stephen often referred to Happy Valley as his second home, because it was where he made countless life-long friendships and relationships.

Stephen spent the majority of his professional career at SEI Investments, where he built and developed sales forces, coached and mentored others, and strived to make an impact in any way possible with his coworkers.  He spent the remainder of his career providing coaching, guidance, and wisdom to others.  A “quick breakfast meeting” was not in his vocabulary, as they rarely lasted less than three hours.  He loved to listen, learn, and truly get to know the person on the other side of the table.

Stephen was strong willed and opinionated at times, and he also had an enormous heart and wonderful (and sometimes inappropriate) sense of humor.  In one phrase, Stephen could be described as “Courageously Curious,” and his inquisitiveness drove all of his pursuits.

Stephen’s true passion in life was his children.  In his own words, “My goals and dreams for my children have always been for them to make a difference.  I can’t specifically define that difference, but I believe and hope it to be special.  I alone cannot affect significant change in this world.  However, I believe through raising my children with passion to reach excellence to appreciate the responsibility they have to be good human beings and to do the same with their children, a difference can be made.”

Stephen’s greatest decision in life was to “Reverse Retire” at an early age so he could spend as much time with his children during the years where he believed he could make the biggest impact on their lives.  He dedicated every ounce of time, energy, and love that he had to ensure his four children could live a happy life, have endless opportunities, and develop a bond with each other so strong it inspired others.

Stephen was happiest when he was with his kids, no matter what he was doing.  He loved traveling to see them compete in sporting events, and rarely missed a game regardless of the distance.  On the off chance that he could not attend, he always had it streaming on the T.V. – sometimes two games at once.  Stephen always bragged that he “raised four wrestlers who happened to play basketball.”  Seeing them compete always brought the biggest smile to his face.  No matter the outcome, he was always proud.

Later in life, Stephen developed a passion for baking and cooking.  It was his form of therapy.  He always tripled the recipe and shared his creations with others.  He also loved to binge watch T.V. shows and movies – if you name it, he has seen it.  He looked forward to his long walks to the “second bridge” in Talamore, flashing a peace sign and smiling at everyone he passed.  He was a scrabble, crossword puzzle, and solitaire King, often sharing his score in the group chats before 5am.

Stephen may have left us early, but he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.  His love, friendship, and loyalty were felt by all.  Everyone who knew him will miss his bright blue eyes, hilarious jokes, endless support, warm heart, contagious smile, and infectious laugh.  His children will miss Their Rock, Superhero, and Best Friend, but find peace in the tight knit group he created.

Stephen truly was the World’s Greatest Dad.

Family and friends are invited to greet the family on Wednesday, July 26th from 9-11am followed by the funeral mass at 11am at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, 1325 Upper State Road, North Wales. Interment will be held privately.

Contributions in Stephen’s name can be made to the Dog Park Bench and Tree Memorial as well the American Heart Association.
