Condolences for John H. Engel

Robert BowenFriday, December 10th

John & Kathleen Engel were great neighbors. They took an interest in our children’s sports and educational activities. I always enjoyed hearing about their grandchildren. Gretchen and I offer our sincere condolences to the family.

My late wife Anna was Mr Engel's secretary for 19 yrs. When he announced his retirement she went into a frenzy to find a special gift for him.I don't remember what she chose but I had something I thought he would really like. She presented him with a baseball autographed by Robin Roberts(I witnessed him sign it for my Dad in Clearwater circa 1985) and his reaction surprised and delighted her.Mr Engel trained Robby for a career in insurance,he liked and admired Robby but thought it inappropriate to ask for an autograph.I've thought often about the time I helped give a selfless, classy guy like John Engel a moment of joy.My condolences to his family,he was one of the Good Guys.

Sad to have just learned of John’ passing. He was a friend and mentor from Phila Life and as a Director at Keystone State Life. We shared Love of Irish heritage, especially Donegal. He was an avid fan of Big Five basketball and we shared thoughts on the glory days of LaSalle basketball. Knew he treasured his wife and girls. A true gentleman!
