Although we did not have the opportunity to get to know Clay and his young wife, we were moved by the courage, commitment, and tremendous love they exhibited during this most difficult of times. The overwhelming support of their parents, siblings and extended family and friends was crucial. Their strength of character, faith, and sheer grit is inspirational and a credit to their families.

We are saddened by the loss of Clay.
While never having met him, we knew he had the determination and grit as his Mom and Dad. It took that determination to fight cancer as he did.

Dear Marissa and Wells family:

I worked with Clay for a year in Irving, TX. I never saw Clay have a bad day, and there were bad days. He always had a smile, exuded confidence, and was a true born leader. The type of leader that bridged people together which our country and world needs. He taught this man, 13 years older than him much and made my time away from wife and family easier. I remember telling him “We will all report to you one day and I look forward to that day, Wells”. I wish I had met him earlier in life. I shall never forget his contagious smile and the positive impact he made on me.

The Ship
#
What is dying
I am standing on the seashore, a ship sails in the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says: "She is gone."
Gone!
Where
Gone from my sight that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says,
"She is gone"
there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up a glad shout:
"There she comes!"
and that is dying.

God’s speed

Clay was one of my best childhood friends that lived just behind my home. Sleepovers, video games, sports, and random shenanigans with him and our friend group are some of my fondest memories from childhood. He was a great friend and I love and appreciate his family for being such a positive part of my life. The last time I saw Clay was on his 30th birthday in Atlanta, where I think we took the only picture we have of us together. I am so glad, now, that we were able to make that happen. You will be deeply missed, my friend.

Craig & Tina NielsonSaturday, July 17th

We are deeply saddened at the too-early passing of Clay. He possessed a kind and generous heart and a ready smile from his youngest days. He was a treasured friend to our sons and a joy to have in our home. He was inclusive of everyone in having fun, including little tag-a-long sisters on a snowy day. He will always be remembered fondly by our family. We know he will be deeply missed by his loving family. Our hearts and prayers go out to each of you.

Jean & Bill CilenteSaturday, July 17th

Our deepest sympathies to your entire family. I will always remember watching the Fairfield Lacrosse games and the Philly pretzels. He was a great player.
May he Rest In Peace.

We haven’t been in touch for a long time but our boys were friends at Mount Carmel. What I remember most about Clay was his kindness, always, even to my much-younger daughter who had such a crush on him. My heart is heavy with sorrow for all of you. What a wonderful family you are and what a heartbreaking loss for you. It does look like Clay’s life, though way too short, was filled with love and joy. You will all be in my prayers. Michael AdamsTuesday, July 27th

I am not surprised by the love, friendship, caring and devotion that comes through these many written condolences and the characterization everyone speaks about when talking about Clay. He is a shining example and legacy of the upbringing his parents Clayton and Phyllis instilled in him. I remember when Clay was born and received a call from Phyllis stating she couldn't be so far away from him when she worked and agreed to come work with me in her "backyard". I feel as though Phyllis' and Clayton's three children grew up before my eyes. They are such devoted parents. Although I never met Marissa, I pray for her comfort also.
You have an advocate in the most important of places although it will take time to heal. I pray for your family everyday that the beautiful memories will outweigh the sorrow!

Phyllis and Family
Where to begin! In my 32 yrs at OLMC SCHOOL, many families have passed thru but not all make a lasting impression. Seeing the pictures of the kids when they were students are what I remember the best. But parents also make impressions as did you and your family. My dearest thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I always looked forward to seeing you, it was always a great visit. Thankyou for allowing me to meet you all. GOD SPEED CLAYTON! Love, Linda Donovan

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Clay’s passing. There are few people and families that come along in life that you’ll remember forever. Clay, and the entire Wells family, are those type of people. I’ll always remember preparing for the next lacrosse season working out at The Edge with Clay, Gordie and Mr. Wells. My deepest condolences. Rest In Peace, Clay.
