Eleanor Thomas

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor Hart Thomas on Friday October 4, 2024, at the age of 86. Eleanor was born on May 23, 1938 in Baltimore, MD to Robert and Eugenia Hart. 

After graduating from Bryn Mawr School (class of 1956), Eleanor studied Philosophy at Bryn Mawr College (class of 1960). Later in life Eleanor returned to Bryn Mawr Graduate School of Social Work to earn her MSW. 

Eleanor worked as a teacher at Overbrook School for the Blind, and was a home visitor at Upsal School for the Blind. She then committed herself to house, home and family, and raised 2 children, 3 cats, and 6 dogs (over the years). After earning her MSW, Eleanor worked as a therapist for Family Service of Bucks County and as a Hospice Social Worker for Chandler Hall. She was also very involved with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) of Bucks County.  

Eleanor married her College sweetheart, Charles Howard Thomas Jr, in 1959, and had 2 children with him. After the death of her first husband in 1997, Eleanor met her second husband, Nick Weingarten. Eleanor and Nick were married in 2003, and have enjoyed a long and happy life together. She will be missed. 

Eleanor enjoyed gardening, reading, playing bridge, doing puzzles, and traveling. 

Eleanor is survived by her husband, Nick Weingarten; her 2 children, Erin Thomas and spouse Dwight Shumate; Gavin Thomas and spouse Jesse Epstein, and grandchild Talia Ru; 2 Step-children, Daniel Weingarten and Shari Weingarten, step-grandchildren, Evi and Kaia; as well as many extended family members. 

Private funeral arrangements are being made by Fleuhr Funeral Home in Richboro, Pa. Eleanor’s final resting place will be at William Penn Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pa. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Eleanor’s name can be made to: Bryn Mawr College Social Work Graduate Fund Pennswood Village Fellowship Fund
