Denis Hurley

Denis Hurley passed away on Friday, September 27, 2024, at his residence in Hatboro. He was 87 years old. Denis was the loving husband to Ann M. (Oskamp) Hurley for 62 years.

Born August 7, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Denis was the son of the late Robert G., Sr. and Mary (Brcik) Hurley. He graduated from Dormont High School in 1955 and served in the United States Army from 1957-1963. Denis worked as a bartender at "Dante's", a Pittsburgh restaurant and piano bar which was the watering hole for many of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the late 1950s. At Dante’s he met the love of his life, Ann. During this time, he also attended classes at Robert Morris Business College and earned an associate’s degree in accounting.

Denis enjoyed a long career at Sandmeyer Steel Company in Philadelphia starting as an accountant and then moving to the sales department, aided by his gift of gab and Irish charm. He retired after 41 years of service as the Vice President – Sales.

Denis volunteered his time as a coach for many baseball, soccer and basketball teams and was always giving unsolicited coaching advice to his grandchildren. In retirement, he volunteered as a member of the Township of Upper Moreland Advisory Planning Agency from 2004-2021, helped at the voting polls and attended hundreds of his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Denis spent many vacations with his family in Cape Cod, Long Beach Island and Maine. He and his son, “Uncle Dude”, famously took the grandchildren on annual fishing trips to Maine and on the houseboat on Raystown Lake. There are many untold stories, but the grandkids have been sworn to secrecy.

Along with his wife Ann, Denis is survived by his children, Kathy Donahue and husband Tom of Doylestown, Mike Hurley of Horsham, and the late Chrissy Andrews; grandchildren, Patrick Donahue and his wife Emily, Ryan Donahue and his wife Abby, Elizabeth Andrews and her fiancé Jonathan Putman, and Ethan Andrews; siblings, the late Robert G. Hurley, Jr., the late Bernard F. Hurley, Sr., Colleen Fryza and her husband Richard; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet Denis’s family on Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 11:00 am until his Funeral Service at 12:00 noon, at the Barn Chapel in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, Doylestown. Interment with Military Honors will take place immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Denis can be made to the Brian T. Donahue Memorial Fellowship in Marine Geology Fund #260046, University of South Florida Foundation, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, ALC100, Tampa, FL 33620. https://giving.usf.edu/online/
