Grant McDermott

Grant Patrick McDermott of Holland died unexpectedly at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne on Tuesday December 28th 2021. He was 19.

Born in Meadowbrook, Grant was the beloved son of Gregory and Jennifer (Schwemmer) McDermott, dear brother of Amanda, Shane and Seamus McDermott. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother; Margaret (Rodgers) McDermott (the late George M.) and maternal grandmother; Corrine (Slater) Schwemmer (the late John J.). He is predeceased by his cousin Allison Gmerek and survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Grant was a lifelong resident of Holland, having attended St. Bede’s Elementary School, Holland Middle School and Council Rock High School South, class of 2021. He was presently a Freshman at Penn State University, Main Campus studying Mechanical Engineering.

Grant lived a life of service. He volunteered over 7 weeks at Camp PALS. PALS is an organization that seeks to inspire a world of belonging that Grant exemplified in his everyday life. He was also a peer mentor at Council Rock South. Grant’s dedication to service was recognized at his high school graduation with two scholarships from local organizations.

Grant has long been a leader in all of his school’s student governments, including this year at Penn State University.

Grant’s life was enriched by his time as a member of St. Bede’s CYO program, FC Bucks soccer, and Council Rock South Men’s Soccer. The time he was able to spend with his teammates and coaches far outweighed the outcome of any game. Some of his most cherished memories are from the time he spent competing.

Grant’s love for space and engineering was sparked his Sophomore year by the NASA HUNCH program at Council Rock South. He participated in three separate projects commissioned by NASA engineers to help solve current issues faced during space exploration. This experience propelled Grant to choose a career path in mechanical engineering. He was a new member to Penn State’s Student Space Propulsion Laboratory.

Grant’s family will receive condolences on Thursday January 6, 2022 at St. Bede the Venerable Church 1071 Holland Rd. Holland, Pa from 10:00am until his Funeral Mass at 12 Noon. Masks are required for all in attendance. Interment will be private.

Contributions in his memory may be made to: PALS Programs, 4965 Grundy Way, Doylestown, PA 18902, or online at http://palsprograms.org/grant.
