Richard Sabol, Jr.
Richard Sabol, Jr. of New Britain, PA died peacefully on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at Doylestown Hospital. He was 54. Richard was the beloved husband of 26 years to Aileen Liebman Sabol.
Born in Panama, growing up in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Richard Sabol, Sr. and Constance Nuss Sabol of North Huntingdon, PA.
Rich was proud to tell everyone he was originally from Duquesne, PA, before moving to North Huntingdon. He graduated from Norwin High School in 1984. Rich then went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He furthered his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a certificate in International Affairs. It was also here at Pitt where he met his wife, Aileen. After moving to Erie in 1995, Rich, a lifelong learner, earned a Master’s Degree in History, his true passion, from Edinboro University.
Rich had a lifelong love of scouting, which he passed on to his son Garrett, and was a proud Eagle Scout, having earned 81 Merit Badges. He could always be seen with his nose in a book about history. He even authored his own book, “The Ninth Pennsylvania Reserve - 1861”, published in 1998.
Rich held many positions in his professional career, including Township Manager for Trafford Borough, Township Manager for Pleasant Hills Borough, Assistant Township Manager for Upper Southampton Township and Director of Finance for Horsham Township. Additionally, Rich was the elected Tax Collector for New Britain Borough. Of all his accomplishments, the role he was most proud of was “dad”.
Rich cherished the time he spent with his family. He loved watching his children play various sports, fishing, hiking, reading, learning about history, trying to cook, playing board games (especially Catan) and telling corny jokes and puns. He loved cheering on his favorite Pittsburgh teams; The Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.
Rich was loved by everyone who met him and made friends everywhere he went. His spirit will live on through his favorite music, warm sunny days, and his loving children, who will miss and love him forever.
In addition to his wife, Aileen, and his parents, Richard is survived by his loving and devoted children; Laurel Sabol, Molly Sabol, and George Garrett Sabol, all of New Britain. He is also survived by his sister, Renee Nist (Ken) of Tennessee, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Richard’s family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021 at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 241 East Butler Avenue (at Sandy Ridge Rd.) New Britain, PA 18901. His interment will be private.
