William J. Heurich

William John Heurich died February 22, 2021 at his home surrounded by family. He moved to Doylestown from Mountain Lakes, NJ, in 2007 and came to embrace the area. Born in 1938 and raised in Queens, he never lost his wonderful accent nor love for New York City, even after living in Puerto Rico and Spain for many years. Bill loved Bette Midler’s song, “Wind Beneath My Wings.” He said that his children were the wind beneath his wings; that he wanted to soar for them. The truth is that Bill was the wind beneath our wings and our hero. He was a good man. We could recount his adventures in the army or at St. John’s University where he graduated with a degree in Business Management, or about his successful career in information systems working for International Paper Company in Puerto Rico and in Spain, and later for the pharmaceutical industry throughout Latin America and Africa. We could even write about the courses he took at the American Baking Institute in order to take over his father’s industrial baking company. An allergy to wheat caused him to switch paths and eventually join the Peace Corps in 1963. Some of our favorite stories are from his Peace Corps days in Ecuador where he met the love of his life, our mother Nanina Romano. And our father was quite the storyteller.

All of these chapters in our father’s life were important to him, but he was not defined by any particular achievement. Rather, he will be remembered for his generosity, kindness and the warmth and laughter he brought into all of our lives. He could never turn anyone away. Whether you were just coming to visit or you needed to get back on your feet, our father always made certain you had a place in our home and he did what he could to help anyone in need. He filled our lives with love and he made certain we laughed. He gave so much to so many.

He is survived by his wife, Nanina, his four children and their spouses, William and Cheryl Heurich, Jon Paul and Kasia Heurich, Tanya and Raul Casas, and Gianina and Gregory Nixon, and ten grandchildren that brought him so much pride: William, Ryan, Allyssa, Peter, Tommy, Raul, Sebastian, Lucia, Ana and Nina. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Erika and Ed Zinser, and their large clan, and numerous nieces and nephews. We can’t forget the extended family he helped raised and who lived at the house in Mountain Lakes: Giovanna, Giovanna Jr. and Silvana Romano. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Heurich and Bertha Gruessinger, his brother Albert Heurich and his sister Maria Graeber. “Fly, fly, fly high against the sky” Bill, “Thank God for you, the wind beneath [our] wings.”

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Thursday, March 4, 2021 from 9:30am to 10:15am followed by his Funeral Mass 10:30am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 235 East State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. William’s interment will be privately held.
