Gerhard Richard Schulz, Jr.

Gerhard Richard Schulz, Jr., died peacefully at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Galloway Twp., NJ on December 30, 2020. This was just one-day shy of the 2-year anniversary of his beloved Roberta’s passing. The couple had been married for 59 years.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Gerhard was the son of the late Gerhard Richard Walter, Sr. and Florence (Heiligmann) Schulz. He is the brother of the late Carl Schulz and Richard Schulz.

Gerhard “Gerry” Schulz grew up in Elkins Park PA. He graduated from Cheltenham High School and then attended Brown Prep Academy. He graduated from Lafayette University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1956.

After college, he continued working for the family business that his father started, and became a principal officer for the American Slag Corporation, Schulz Bros. Division in Olney.

In his personal life, he was a devoted and supportive husband, father, grandfather and friend. He and his wife Roberta realized their dream when they restored “Sunnyside,” a beautiful 1776 farm house located in Glenside PA.

There were many great memories at Sunnyside! Gerry enjoyed spending time at home with family as well as supporting his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He loved watching his children swim, especially at the collegiate level, as well as the many other sports and events in which his children and grandchildren participated.

He also was a member of the Republican party. For many years, he volunteered as a committeeman and then served as a judge of elections in Glenside PA.

He and Roberta retired in Ocean city NJ, at their bayside retreat. He called it “paradise.” He liked to get up early and go on long walks, ride his bicycle and exercise at the aquatic/recreational center. He also enjoyed getting to know the business owners and supporting small businesses in the community. He was an active member of the American Legion in Ocean City New Jersey--Morvay - Miley - Cruice Post 524.

Among his favorite past times was listening to Elvis music, watching John Wayne movies and spending time with friends and family. He had a fun, outgoing personality and would always say “hi” to anyone he met. He brought smiles and laughter into many people’s lives.

He is survived by his loving children, Gerhard Richard Schulz, III and his wife Alicia and Linda F. Schulz; his grandchildren, Luke, Gerhard R. “Garrett” Schulz, IV, Lauren, Lexi and Michael; his sisters-in-law, Kathy Schulz and Beverly Osborne.

Due to the limitations of the pandemic, funeral services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to American Legion Morvay-Miley Post 524 in Ocean City, NJ 08226.
