Anthony J. Dorr
Anthony (Andy) J. Dorr passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. He was 89.
Anthony was the beloved husband of the late Margaret C. Graham Dorr for 61 years.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the loving son to the late Joseph and Catherine McGee Dorr, his two sons Christopher and Stephen Dorr, as well as his late daughter-in-law Virginia Dorr.
Andy and his wife both grew up in the Frankford section of Oxford Circle. Andy was an army veteran that spent time in the south where he learned his future profession as a printer. Shortly after he was discharged, he learned to drive, bought a car, not necessarily in that order and headed home to Philadelphia with his wife and oldest son. It was in Oxford Circle that they began building a home and adding on to their family. Andy spent a lot of time volunteering in his life.
Andy was very active in his communities for many years. In the 50’s, he was an assistant football coach for the Frankford Crusaders and then went on to be the Head Coach for the Hollidaysburg Golden Saints, in the 70’s.
He also coached volleyball for the Saints. In 60’s, in Philadelphia, he acted as the local committeeman, and in the 70’s he even held the role as President of the PTA in Hollidaysburg. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading the paper, music, movies and was an avid golfer for many years. His love of music and movies was made apparent to all that knew him. His CD player would be playing anything from Sinatra to the Mamas and the Pappas to the Beatles. Turner Classic Movies was a favorite channel and would often be on when you made a visit. If you came in and he was engrossed in a film, he was known to say, “Oh this is a real, real, good one, you should watch it”. Or if you sadly had not yet taken the opportunity to see a classic, “You haven’t seen it? Oh, well that is just a real shame!” Andy’s smile and laugh were infectious and often made you smile just to think of his bursts of laughter.
He was an outdoors person who loved the sun and the beach. No SPF for him, it was Hawaiian Tropic all the way and he was at his happiest when he was outside in the sunshine.
Andy is survived by his four loving children: Richard J. Dorr (Cindy), Michael A. Dorr, David A. Dorr (late Virginia), and Margaret Ann (Meg) Szanajda (Jim), as well as 9 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Saturday November 21, 2020 from 10:30am until his Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM at St Andrews, the Olde Church, located at 135 S. Sycamore St, Newtown, PA 18940. His interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Anthony’s name may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, 100 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
