Obituaries Phyllis A. Andreoni (Breen)
A private service will be conducted for Phyllis A. Andreoni, who died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020 at her residence in Yardley, Pa. She was 95 years old.
She had lived in Yardley since 2007.
Born in Granby, Mass., she was a reporter for the Union News (now MassLiveMedia) newspaper in Springfield, Mass., for nearly 25 years, covering education and general news. She wrote the column “Chalk and Pointer” for 16 years, and was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree by Western New England College in recognition of her “significant contributions to the field of education” through her thoughtful columns. After retiring from the newspaper in 1992, she was assistant director of public relations at Holyoke Community College for two years.
Earlier, during 25 years of travel as an Air Force wife, she wrote a weekly column for a British newspaper in Tripoli, Libya, and contributed to Air Force base newspapers in several states. Other awards include: a first place Herbert Bayard Swope Memorial Award from the national Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services (1979); the Higher Education and Financial Awareness Award presented jointly by the College Board, the Massachusetts Board of Regents, and other organizations (1985); a public service award from Phi Delta Kappa at the University of Massachusetts School of Education (1992); and a recognition award for being a “journalist par excellence” from Springfield Technical Community College (1992).
Phyllis enjoyed acting, and had been a member of the Highfield Players in Falmouth, Mass., where she appeared in several summer productions and wrote copy for playbills. She was also an instinctive cook, creating memorable family dinners and recipes that are still treasured.
Phyllis leaves two daughters and sons-in-law: Kathleen Lariviere and her husband Paul of Manchester, Maine, and Colleen Daze and her husband John Marcille of Yardley, and a grandson, Jeffery Lariviere and his wife Nancy Zdanis of Westfield, Mass. She was the daughter of Thomas L. and Anna (Leary) Breen. She is also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Literacy Initiative, 990 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19103.
