Catherine Ann Dougherty (Schmutz)

Catherine Ann Dougherty passed away peacefully on Monday January 13th 2020. She was with Charles, her beloved husband of 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bud and Joe and her sister Joan Paillard. She is survived by her son Charles Jr, daughter Catherine and her husband Anthony, son Patrick and his wife Michele, and her son Terrence.

‘Mom Mom’ also had 3 gorgeous and whip-smart granddaughters: Alison and her husband Don, Laura and her boyfriend Zach and Reilly and her invisible friend ‘Ball-y”

Mom mom loved her grand kids even more than peanut butter crackers.

Catherine (Kay) grew up in the German Catholic neighborhood of Olney with her brothers Aloysius (Bud), Joseph and her sister Joan. She graduated from Little Flower High School, where her devastating one hand set shot and grit on the basketball court earned her the nickname “Cookie” Schmutz. She loved nothing more than dancing with her sister Joan at every parish dance they could find. Which is where, in fact, she met Charles - her husband to be. Shortly after marriage they began their family life in the bustling metropolis that was Hatboro. They raised 4 children - Charles Jr, Catherine, Patrick and Terrence (one of whom is a not only a model citizen but also widely recognized as a worldly raconteur - which child that is has yet to be determined, and will be litigated in family court...or the local bar) The Dougherty’s next invaded their stately Southampton homestead on Bristol Road and proceeded to terrorize the neighborhood for many years. They blazed many toboggan trails, built and destroyed tree houses and snow forts both and celebrated many many birthdays, Christmases, graduations...and a parole or (two?)

Upon her return to the workforce, Catherine decided to grace the halls of the Willow Grove Flight Operations unit for many years (before being asked to leave as she wasn’t actually employed there)

Kay was ceremoniously decorated upon retirement from the Flight Ops team - and she was finally off to seek her ever-elusive “5 minutes peace”.

Kay loved many things in life, all of the simple variety:

A cold “Millers” beer on a hot night, with a cool breeze and the Phillies on the TV, but if the stars aligned and we were lucky enough to get Don Rickles or Rodney Dangerfield on the Carson show - the entire neighborhood would surely be awash in her infectious cackle - it was without question the greatest sound I shall ever hear, and it will remain with me forever.

Mom - we Love you and we miss you
