Sue Heitman (Simmons)

Sue Heitman of Newtown died peacefully and surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, January 9, 2020.  She was 88.

Sue was the loving wife of the late David R. Heitman.

Born in White County, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Oden and Braskie Bond Simmons.  She was also preceded in death by brothers Clevie Simmons and James Simmons.

Sue started her life on her family’s farm in Indiana.  Her desire for education would find her completing hernursing education at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, where she also began her career as a registered nurse. It was during this time that she would begin her studies in mathematics, starting at Purdue University.  She would later earn her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Butler University and subsequently a master’s degree in mathematics from IUPUI.

While at Purdue she met her loving and devoted husband, David.. Throughout life Sue and David were partners and provided a loving family environment for their children .

When her children entered high school, Sue became a high school mathematics teacher in the Indianapolis area. Later she and her husband would re-locate to Pennsylvania.  In retirement they enjoyed countless trips and were proud and doting grandparents.  Additionally, Sue’s thirst for knowledge found her studying various foreign languages.  She leaves behind a strong legacy of love and devotion to her family and will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her children, Karl D. Heitman and his wife Tamiko of Newtown, and Karen H. Lyle and her husband Jerry of Poquoson, VA.  She also leaves behind her brothers, Max and Dale Simmons; four loving grandchildren: Klaus, Alex (wife Zhu), Jennifer, and Dennis and her great grandchildren Peter & Jacob.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Thursday January 16th at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.) Richboro, PA 18954.  Her interment will follow in Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown.
